Abstract:
This paper reports a License Plate Recognition (LPR) software development activities. For many years, vehicle LPR systems plays an important role in many traffic management, security and parking systems. There are various techniques available for LPR. This study focuses on the research of algorithms being used for LPR, compare them in relation to the accuracy, difficulty, performance and effectiveness. There are three major components that deal with extraction, segmentation and recognition of the LPR. The extracting of the plate region uses an edge detection and smearing algorithms. Whereas the character segmentation uses smearing, filtering and morphological algorithms. Lastly, the plate recognition uses the template matching algorithm. Static images are tested to determine the performance of the proposed algorithms. Based on the experiment conducted, the algorithms portray very good performance in the LPR system.
