For the past few years, ransomware maintains to be one of the most disastrous cyber threatsand is actively threatening IT users. Many organizations and individuals around the world have been affected by ransomware. The data, files and system held ransom by the attackers, interrupted the organizations’ daily operations and users lost their access to their own files.From time to time, cyber criminals release new variants of ransomware, thus making the effort of detecting it a challenging and arduous task. Due to this, there is a growing interest among security researchers, to tackle the issues in detecting ransomware. This paper discusses about ransomware, its categories and we reviewed the current approaches implemented by other researchers in the domain of ransomware detection.
