Abstract:


Routing Information Protocol is one of the oldest in- terior gateway routing protocols which is still being used in a lot of small networks. An important feature of this protocol is that periodic updates are sent by the routers to their neighbors. The updates are sent irrespective of any changes in the routing table. Such unnecessary update messages result in wastage of a lot of bandwidth especially in small networks. One proposed option for improvement is to change peri- odic updates to triggered ones, which allows routers to send updates only in case of change in routing table.
